Hi Barbara! Thanks very much for the links. I found the first one but not the second. Like you said, I couldn't find the actual polls either. It's rather odd that such things would fall through the cracks so easily in this day and age...

Well, I'm very glad you have had a positive experience in your life as a newbie atheist. I hope it always stays that way. :) That's good to hear. I do think there are pockets of tolerance in places, though.

Most of my friends are atheists. In fact, I guess all of them are, when I think about it. Which I think is very unusual. I know that most of my neighbors, for example, are quite religious, so I'm a definite minority here. I guess like minds kind of gravitate towards each other. :)

Here's a Newsweek link that mentions the same poll:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/45574

And there was another poll done in 2007 that had the similar results, unfortunately:

http://www.psra.com/news.jsp?op=detail&id=1461&area=archive

For some reason I can't find a link to either of the actual polls though. I'll repost another comment with a link if I'm ever able to track one down.

As for the country becoming less tolerant, I'm a newbie atheist so I certainly couldn't say. I'm doing my best to get people I know talking and thinking more about religion though, and for the most part they've been pretty receptive. The positive response I've gotten could just be a result of living in my own social bubble though.

Hey FL... well, I didn't mention them, that was Sam Harris.
I'll edit this post and try to make it clearer that it's basically all his article after my first teeny paragraph. I'll also add links to those polls if I can find them.

I totally agree, this country has definitely become less tolerant of the godless, or should I say, nonchristian even as recently as 2006. That's a personal opinion though.

Good post. I have to wonder if that list would make it to print today. Perhaps I've just become more aware of the vitriol and generalizations towards us godless folk but things seem to have become even less tolerant since 2006, at least here in the U.S. .

Do you have links to any of the polls you mention? I'm not trying to call you out, I'm just curious whom conducted them and what methods were used. Nothing screws up the gathering of public data like personal politics and geographic bias.
