Dead Cats Archive

Ooh, Shiny!

What I'm reading now:
The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (Listening to the audio version. Excellent!)
Idlewild (Very interesting, quite different. Written by Carl Sagan's son, Nick)
Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism (my favorite atheist book so far)

What I just finished:
You Suck: A Love Story (It made me LOL)
Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story (It sucked me in. Fun and funny.)
The City of Ember (movie was much better)
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) (best trilogy I've ever read!)
The Heathen's Guide to World Religions (witty and informative)

What I'm waiting for, or what's waiting on my nightstand:
Microcosm: E. Coli and the New Science of Life (Vintage)
The Day of the Triffids

Great Stuff I Watched Recently:
War, Inc. (very clever satire from the headlines. cynical but funny)
Taken (gritty, violent, excellent retribution!)
The Day of the Triffids (BBC series. Good acting, 80's low budget effects)
City of Ember (DVD) (good movie, much better than the book)

Happy Atheist Love

Amusing and Serious Stuff

An amusing cartoon about a serious topic:

Women can’t make their own decisions according to Bill Napoli in South Dakota. This funny shirt is very helpful for all of us poor females that can’t think for ourselves. You can get the t-shirt here.

And a serious comparison about outgoing president Bush and Osama bin Laden. Remember him?

My husband adds: both are cowards taking advantage of impressionable youth to do their dirty work while they sit safely protected thousands of miles away. And neither would even have a following in an enlightened secular society.

I don’t know that I agree with all of that information. But it seems like I’ve heard most of it before. Especially about both Bush and bin Laden being supported by intolerant, extreme, fundamentalist leaders and followers. The one above it I’m also pretty sure is accurate, about Bush feeling like god talks to him and he talks to god.

Bush is on his way out, (thank the founding fathers for keeping term lengths relatively short), but there is a huge danger of getting an even more intolerant, fundamentalist, bible thumping crazy person in the White House, who believes the Iraq War is a holy war sent from god (or some version of insanity like that), and who supported a practice in Alaska of making rape victims pay for their own rape kits in the emergency room.

The more I hear about OBama, the more I can ethically support him. I was listening to a new podcast (um.. This Week in Science) and they were talking about the science policies of each candidate. I was washing dishes while I was listening to the September 23rd episode, but OBama seems interested in furthering science under his administration, if elected. McCain, on the other hand, seems rather Draconian and not very interested in funding any kind of scientific endeavors.

I’ll have to listen more closely or find their accompanying website to get more information, but unfortunately, it’s time to cook dinner (again! sheesh, it seems like I do this Every Night!).

Of course, we all need to be skeptical of all of this information. Like I said, I’d like to fact check but dinner calls at the moment. If you feel so inclined to comment with links or information about such things, please do so.
