What I'm reading now:
The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture
God Hates You, Hate Him Back: Making Sense of The Bible by CJ Werleman
The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture by Darrel W Ray
Microcosm: E. Coli and the New Science of Life (this is excellent. Well written and fascinating. Highly recommended)
God Is Not Great (Hitchens is extremely erudite but I agree with him a lot here. Excellent so far)
The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (Listening to the audio version. Excellent!)

What I just finished:
Nonsense: Red Herrings, Straw Men and Sacred Cows: How We Abuse Logic in Our Everyday Language
Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism (Recommended. The first half is a great read. Thorough and detailed but easy to understand.)
Letting Go of God (I listened to the audio version. It was poignant and funny. Highly recommended!)
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) (best trilogy I've ever read!)

Religulous: We’re On The Road To Nowhere

If I believed in divine providence I would say that destiny helped me stumble upon the following movie. But I’m as godless as can be, so I just have to thank whoever posted Religulous to AtheistNation. I don’t go to the movies, so I didn’t get to see it in the theaters. But I watched it a bit ago and I have to say I’m glad I did. It was excellent.

Here is the full movie (140 minutes)

I learned some interesting facts and tidbits, but most of what Bill Maher finds out in these interviews around the world are not new to me. But combined with his commentary, it is interesting and provocative, to say the least.

I was afraid I’d hate this movie because I was afraid it would fill me with impotent rage, but somehow it didn’t. It frightened me, yes, but Bill Maher is masterful, helped by awesome editing, at telling us all something we need to know in a palatable format.

We’re on the road to nowhere with religion. It demands that people submit and remain ignorant and childish, it encourages people to hate and murder and kill for the stupidest reasons, it lies, and it is insidiously dangerous unlike any other threat in the whole world.

So whether you rent it, buy it, watch it here or however you manage to get a hold of it, watch this movie. Get your friends to watch it. It’s enlightening if you allow it to be, even for a cynical old atheist like myself.

  • I saw this movie recently too. I’ve enjoyed Bill Maher and watch his show when its on. This movie basically says and shows everything we’ve come to expect from the mentally handicapped. It was the last segment, when it went from a semi-lighthearted slap in the face of religion to full-on in your face WTF are these people thinking and what will they do to this world, that I really enjoyed and the build up to it was good.

    I definitely recommend it!

Mentally handicapped? I disagree. I bet you believe that scientist who said that prayer and meditation make people crazy because it changes peoples’ brain chemistry- funny how he forgot to mention HOW it was changed, what the experiment WAS exactly, and how it was conducted, not to mention how many times they did it. Real scientific proof must be verifiable, and as far as I can tell his isn’t. By the way, assuming that all religious people are mentally handicapped might be a hasty generalization- just because the ones on the movie and the ones YOU met are does not mean that all or most religious people are.

You make a good point. I agree, however, this discussion has given me a little inspiration, so just for that sake I’m going to run with it…

Being religious is a self-induced mental handicap. Each person as specifically killed their inquisitive side and their independence. No more do they yearn for the forbidden fruit of knowledge, and no more do they think for themselves on many issues–a magical being through a book tells them what they are supposed to do.

Note there is a difference between being religious, and being spiritual on that.

    That is all.
