What I'm reading now:
The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture
God Hates You, Hate Him Back: Making Sense of The Bible by CJ Werleman
Microcosm: E. Coli and the New Science of Life (this is excellent. Well written and fascinating. Highly recommended)
God Is Not Great (Hitchens is extremely erudite but I agree with him a lot here. Excellent so far)
The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (Listening to the audio version. Excellent!)

What I just finished:
Nonsense: Red Herrings, Straw Men and Sacred Cows: How We Abuse Logic in Our Everyday Language
Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism (Recommended. The first half is a great read. Thorough and detailed but easy to understand.)
Letting Go of God (I listened to the audio version. It was poignant and funny. Highly recommended!)
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) (best trilogy I've ever read!)

Duelity: A Different Take on Creation Versus Evolution

duelityDuelity provides a different take on creation versus evolution. With a slightly humorous, and definitely ironic reversal of roles. The creation story is told in a very scientific manner, while the big bang and evolution story is told in a poetic religious manner.

Besides this seeming like a fairly unique idea, the creators have made the two videos so that you can watch them separately, or at the same time.

Thus: Duelity

Thought you might be interested in this article about ………….
“Jimmy Carter (President of the United States from 1977 to 1981) has severed his ties with the Southern Baptist Convention after six decades. He characterized the decision as “painful and difficult” but viewed it as unavoidable due to the enduring conduct of male religious leaders who, for selfish ends, selectively utilize scriptural texts to interpret teachings in ways that overwhelmingly subjugate women.”

Yes I recall seeing something about that. Thanks for sharing it Buzzy. :)
Of course the bible really does subjugate women, so I’m not really sure that’s the best reason to break off with the southern baptist convention. But hey, whatever it takes I guess.

  • Yay Johnny :) Does he have a blog I can steal his good stuff from directly? (or, you know, feature on Sunday School? Yeah, that sounds loads better)

    Johnny Reply:

For atheist and science related stuff, I just post here on HDC or over on Think Atheist.

Funny coincidence relating to your “Sunday School” entries; I do a Sunday Morning Service on Think Atheist each week.

What’s wrong with the god of the big-3 monster-theisms?

What’s not to love about xianity? Could it be garbage like this:

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing – if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. 1 Timothy 2:11-15 NIV

Whoa! Change ‘childbearing’ to bearing a son and you get Freud’s solution to the so-called Electra Complex. Neurosis = Sin.

When will this morally diseased fiction suffer its much needed extinction?
