Hi Neece and Everyone!
My alluding to the 'historical' Jesus (there is really little scientific data to support his existence)comes from connecting him to those of like mind (??), such as the Buddha, Lao-tsu,Mohammed, and other figures who were allegedly conceived in magic, were amazing kids, and grew up to be teachers. Most religions, if you look carefully, have one common thread, which I already mentioned, and that is that we don't screw with someone else's life.
I suspect that I am a little older than you Neece, not that age makes me better, but maybe I'm tired-
those INVESTED in their religions will hold on to it, relative to the years of investment.
For a long time, I was an "indoctrinated" Catholic,(even a Benedictine Oblate). The hard questions were before me, but it took a long time for me to dare and successfully ask what they meant.I arrived at these conclusions:
1)The 'Church' (mainly Catholic, but 'Christian' are included) is the biggest, time honored, successful scam visited on human beings
2)Those 'invested' in their religions don't want to hear us;in fact, they turn off their hearing if we speak to them:they are only and exclusively interested in evangelizing to anyone who comes off as suspiciously unbelieving/skeptic.
3)Religious people (the 'religulous')don't want to entertain what we offer
them, which is mainly an invitation to THINK.They KNOW, they are CERTAIN, and often, events in their lives fire their beliefs. They don't want us to think their 'system'is "fisticious".Like, they're happy on the 'road to nowhere'.
4)The best way to deal with them:DON'T...or...Make them ask you and by all means, have your ducks in a row when you answer them (IF that time comes...)make them wonder what/how makes you tick.Remember, they are on fire for a man (possibly),their leader and will do almost anything in "His" name,(does this sound like the same guy who promises 20 virgins?) including waging war (even though "He" spoke of peace).Really, allow time and space to enlighten them;odds are that you won't, and you may become bald or grow hair on your chest trying.Be an example to them, make them wonder.
In closing, just an added "FYI":
Highly indoctrinated/orthodox Catholics don't believe Mary even gave birth to Jesus-he just 'morphed'out of her body.Nice, hey? Take a look at the film (it's on google or youtube),THE HOLY GHOST PEOPLE-there are still congregations of them around impoverished areas.

It's a viciously sweet mythological cake. It rots your brain, in my opinion.
I am personally indifferent to a historical jesus. I think if such a man existed, it means nothing. What matters is how the story of the jesus figure has taken on this complicated life and mysticism, full of false promises and harsh punishments.
I agree that most people find great comfort in their faith, and that it will stay that way as long as people wallow in ignorance and eschew critical thinking for Survivor and what some ridiculous hollywood star did yesterday.

Hi Marehd,
Welcome to Heaving Dead Cats! :)
Your belief sounds like Deism. It's an interesting idea.
Thanks for the compliment. I will have to think about how best to tackle televangelists. They are so repugnant to me that I can't usually pay them attention without bursting into flames.

Just a little n.b. after my initial post. The world will be in abundance of believers as long as there is suffering, ignorance and people who embody those things minus critical thinking.I mean to say that they DARE NOT THINK, lest their security blanket be realized for what it is.(That means mass panic.)
I may be wrong, but if people profess belief (arrggghh yes, they don't know or care to know about Constantine and the fact that a multitude of people endured nasty crucifixion deaths at the same time the historical Jesus)they need to be good to one another, and humans can't do that.
Also, I don't believe the historical Jesus died...I do believe that some man of his name and fame did accept some harsh Roman punishment, but he also was a member of the Essene community, who mastered many healing arts-hence, the white garment in renderings. They, according to scholars, were a quiet, hermetic desert dwelling sect.As for the Jesus man-he basically asked people not to screw up each others' lives-simple as that! All the son of 'God' stuff is icing on a mythological cake.

Hi-
I stumbled upon this website, happily.I cannot understand believers...I have an MA from a prestigious Jesuit University and I guess I'm supposed to believe. Working at a no-kill animal shelter truly had an effect on me, as did events during the Bush theofascistration.I am in any case, with Marx, as well as others: religion is the "opiate of the people".It also pays well, that is;if you're a privileged televangelist punk.
I asked a few years ago, after hearing an "in-church" Bible reading...what's loving about a 'father'sending his son to die? I came up with 'nothing'.I wondered about the little kids there, hearing about 'God' asking Abraham to stab his son in order to prove love-and we wonder where crimes come from!
I believe there may be some entity, but if "it" did create us by evolution..."it" has left us to our own devices. Now that is scary and at the same time not, as the major thread in all of the religions really says,"an' harm ye no one".
You have a great site here...maybe you'll want to tackle the televangelists one of these days-
