Debating Evolution with religious folk is a waste of time.
With the unknown, one is confronted with danger and discomfort–the first instinct is to abolish these painful states. First principle: any explanation is better than none. We all do it, we hear a strange noise and we quickly come up with a guess to explain the noise, i.e., wind, a ghost, a…? All tribes/social groups through time have come up with myths to explain unknowns, answers arrived at not through reason or logic, but to tranquilize the fear of the unknown, providing comfort.
Religious folk form their identities through their religious teachings and any information that doesn’t fit their belief system, triggers feelings of insecurity and fear; emotionally, they feel they are being personally attacked–they must abolish the danger and discomfort they feel. They can’t use reason or logic to evaluate any of the millions of facts supporting [...]

I thought I’d share this with you. The BBC has a page for each religion where they give a bit of information at a glance, and one for atheism too.
Atheism is the absence of belief in any gods or spiritual beings. The word Atheism comes from a, meaning without, and theism meaning belief in god or gods.
- Atheists don’t use god to explain the existence of the universe.
- Atheists say that human beings can devise suitable moral codes to live by without the aid of Gods or scriptures.
Reasons for non-belief
People are atheist for many reasons, among them:
- They find insufficient evidence to support any religion.
- They think that religion is nonsensical.
- They once had a religion and have lost faith in it.
- They live in a non-religious culture.
- Religion doesn’t [...]

I think I’m beginning to understand something about believing. Over the years I’ve encountered many religious people who have tried to explain to me why I need to believe as they do, why they are right and I am a fool for not understanding that. But I don’t have faith like they do. Hell, I don’t want it. Faith, by definition is belief that is not based on proof.
I embrace reason and a desire to understand the universe. While we certainly don’t have all of the answers, that doesn’t mean we stop asking questions. There is always something interesting to learn about.
I love asking questions. One that has puzzled me in the last year or so is why people cling to false beliefs so strongly. No matter how much I reason with a True Believer TM or try to educate them with facts, they [...]

The other day, a friend of mine left the following quote on her Facebook page, in the info section of her profile:
“Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones” Psalm 137:9
(Gotta love the fricken “good” book)
This is one of my favorite bible quotes as well, mainly because it shows the “good” book as the charming, moral, loving guide that it is. Meaning it is none of those things.
Anyway, a relative of hers sent her a private message on Facebook, saying the following:
This book that you so malign is so important to me and to many whom I love. I do not understand why you feel such contempt and hatred for Christianity and ‘the fricken”good” book’. For many of us it is the foundation on which we base our lives. It is a history book, a poetry [...]

Hello everyone. I heard from Beth again today and will share our further exchange with you in a minute. After I posted the first conversation with her, she and I corresponded at least once more that night. So the following exchange is actually a few emails back and forth. I hope I can keep it straight for you so that it all makes sense.
I have to say, talking to christians is no easy task. I’m sure you understand that in your own experience. It’s almost crazy-making to try to reason with someone who believes that Jesus raised the dead and walked on water. I don’t know how people who debate such things don’t lose their tempers and start smashing things. I guess I understand why some atheists are considered angry. They’re probably just frustrated, like I am.
Anyway, here we go. We’ll start with Beth. My comments will [...]

Hey everyone. A bit ago, I posted Here We Go Again which was from a comment from a christian named Ash. I heard from him again. This is the opening of his email:
I’m not too interested in argument, since I’m sure we’ll get to a point where everything becomes circular. I’m wondering if we could share our personal experiences and philosophies and discuss their effects on our differing beliefs. For example, the church I attended until I was 13 never talked about “burning in hell,” but focused more on New Testament teachings. Fear of hell has never been a big reason for me to believe in God.
I also remember asking a lot of questions. After reading one of those Kid’s encyclopedia for science books I asked my youth pastor how God could have created man when man evolved from monkeys. He said that nobody can [...]

10 Reasons To Believe In god?
I wrote a post on HDC awhile ago called 10 Reasons Atheists Are Morally Superior To Religious Fundamentalists. I toned it down then cross posted it to de-conversion a month ago, and I still get comments on there. Yesterday a guy named Mark wrote the comment below. After each reason, I’ll leave a reply:
